Crafted in a classically-inspired shape, this closed urn evokes the elegance of the Georgian period. Since the Roman era, Blue John was used to create fine decorative wares. This intriguing stone demands a great deal of skill in its handling and was the material most favored by silversmith Matthew Boulton, especially for the creation of his stoneware vases. A soft and brittle stone, it responds very quickly to heat, and must be carefully dried in order to retain its original color. This urn is wonderful example of Blue John artistry.

Circa 1810

11 5/8" high

Discovered by the Romans over 2,000 years ago, Blue John stone is found only among the caverns of Treak Cliff Hill near Castleton in Derbyshire, England. Celebrated for its unique bands of blues, purples, and violets, Blue John was in great demand during the 18th and early 19th centuries. The colorful and decorative stone was even worked into columns in some of the finest houses in Great Britain, most notably Chatsworth, home of the Duchess of Devonshire. The name ‘Blue John’ is thought to originate from the French term bleu et jaune, meaning blue and yellow. The largest veins of Blue John had disappeared by the early 19th century and today only two working Blue John Stone mines remain, producing only a miniscule amount of the precious stone. The small amount that remains is buried in the veins of limestone which reside deep within Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern. Only 0.25 tons of the stone is extracted annually, and is sparingly reserved for small objects and jewelry.
M.S. One of the most recognizable icons of the mid-20th century, the Yankee Clipper is regarded among America's most enduring intergenerational heroes. This award — the Jim Thorpe Lifetime Achievement Award — is an embodiment of all he achieved during his life and his career. Presented to DiMaggio at the 2nd Annual Jim Thorpe Pro Sports Awards on July 12, 1993, it is one of only four ever awarded. Joe DiMaggio was the second recipient of this prestigious honor; he was preceded by Muhammad Ali, while Henry “Hank” Aaron and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar followed him.

Arguably the greatest baseball player to have ever played the game, DiMaggio is perhaps most famous for his incredible hitting streak of 56 consecutive games. Only three other players — Pete Rose (44 games), Paul Molitor (39) and Jimmy Rollins (38) — have even gotten within three weeks of DiMaggio’s 56 games since he set the record in 1941. DiMaggio also holds the second-longest hitting streak in minor league history, having hit in 61 straight games in 1933 as a member of the Pacific Coast League's San Francisco Seals.

A cultural icon of America's favorite pastime, DiMaggio led the Yankees to nine World Series wins during his 13-year career, which spanned from 1936 to 1951. The son of Sicilian immigrants, he embodied the American Dream and earned his place as the American League’s Most Valuable Player three times over. He cemented his status as a lasting pop idol when he married America's favorite glamor girl, Marilyn Monroe, in 1954, and became the face of Mr. Coffee in the mid-1970s.

This award comes with its letter of authenticity signed by Paula DiMaggio Hamra and Kathie DiMaggio Stein, the grandchildren of Joe DiMaggio.

Presented in 1993

7 1/4" wide x 6 1/2" deep x 11 1/2" high
M.S. Known as the “First Lady of the Renaissance,” she was well-educated and fashionable, and she supported some of the most notable artists of the era, including da Vinci, Raphael, Titian, Giorgione and many more. Some scholars have even speculated that she could be the sitter for the Mona Lisa.

Angelo Minghetti studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna before founding his own ceramic workshop in Bologna in 1858, where he endeavored to recapture the art of 15th and 16th-century Italian majolica, particularly the Urbino ware. He is best known for his elaborately decorated majolica busts depicting Renaissance figures like the present pair. He found inspiration in the great terracotta sculptors of the Renaissance, such as Luca della Robbia and his colorful tin-glazed earthenware.

Beginning in 1869, Minghetti began exhibiting at the grand Universal Exhibitions of the late 19th century, including the 1873 Vienna World’s Fair, the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1878 and the 1883 National Exhibition of Fine Arts in Rome, among others. He was awarded several medals at these exhibitions, and his works were commended for their execution and decoration, which very closely resembled authentic Renaissance earthenware pieces. Today, the Victoria and Albert Museum (London) holds in its collection several majolica busts by Minghetti, and a majolica plaque by Minghetti resides in Oxford University’s Ashmolean Museum.

Signed “A.M.”

Circa 1880

Each 27 1/4" wide x 13 1/2" deep x 38 1/8" high
M.S. Georgian — and later Regency — aesthetics revived classical themes of the ancient Mediterranean and Near East. With a proud stance, gaping jaw and unyielding gaze, the stately panther closely resembles the grand ancient Roman panthers often carved from marble as trapezophoros table supports. The regal cat rests atop a plinth, also made of Blue John, with Siena and Ashford marble detailing.

The intrinsic and richly hued mineral inclusions of the Blue John replicate the textures and colors of the animal’s fur. The rare stone is a variety of natural fluorite found exclusively in Derbyshire, England. It was first discovered in the early 18th century, but its mining did not being until circa 1760. Blue John was a wildly popular material in the decorative arts during the Georgian and Regency periods, and it was so fashionable that its only known quarries were depleted by 1825 and remain extinct today.

The mineral’s brittle consistency made carving or chiseling Blue John virtually impossible; the most common pieces found in this medium are simple columns or urns — round subjects that could be shaped easily. Apprenticed to renowned sculptor-architects Cosimo Fanzago and Dionisio Lazzari, Vaccaro moved towards more sober and monumental works than the decorative architectural sculptures they were known for, as evidenced in the present work. The influence of his close friend, celebrated painter Francesco Solimena, is evident in his figures’ elegant poses and the fluidity of their ample robes. The torsion of the body, theatrical gesture and painstakingly elaborate embroidery of Moses’ robe demonstrates a mastery of both medium and execution. Though all of Vaccaro’s figures achieve a great elegance and fineness, his depiction of Moses is superbly profound.

Towards the end of his career, Vaccaro was commissioned to create marble figures of King David and Moses for the Jesuit Church of St. Francis Xavier in Naples. At the time of his sudden death in 1706, only David was nearly finished, so the Jesuits asked his son Domenico Antonio to complete the pair. Many of the inmates at the prisoner of war camps were skilled artisans long before they were soldiers, and because of the long duration of the conflict and cost of care, their captors encouraged detainees to use their skills to create objects to be sold at civilian open markets. Because of the intricacy of these fascinating objets d'art, very few of these models have survived the test of time. This masterpiece is impeccably detailed with soldiers and cannons lining the platforms. Adding to the rarity of this piece is that it has moving parts, as only a scant few model carvings were ever created with such mechanical accuracy. The soldiers have movable arms, while the guillotine features a movable "blade" for added authenticity.

By many accounts, Napoleonic prisoners of war were confined to mostly makeshift prisons in old castles, naval dockyards and purpose-built camps. That means inmates would have had to create these amazing models using handmade tools made of whatever was available, including shards of glass for carving. Unlike most known Washington clocks, which survive in multiple examples and follow established models, this monumental work appears to be entirely unique, distinguished by its exceptional quality, ambitious scale and unparalleled complexity.

The clock presents an elaborate Revolutionary War tableau rendered in finely cast bronze with a rich dark brown patina. Washington stands confidently before a military encampment, holding a scroll inscribed “Déclaration d’Indépendance,” while military instruments and camp furnishings surround him. A book atop the clock case bears an inscription in French referring to the various branches and components of the American military.

The composition was inspired by a revered portrait by Charles Willson Peale, with numerous details from the painting translated into bronze. The sculptural elements display extraordinary technical accomplishment, from the intricate textures of the encampment and military accoutrements to the elaborate base adorned with fruit garlands, crossed weapons, an eagle and a quiver. Warm Siena marble veneers provide a striking contrast to the richly patinated bronze.

Following the American Revolution, George Washington became an international symbol of leadership, liberty and republican ideals. His close friendship with the Marquis de Lafayette and his immense popularity in France inspired a small number of luxury decorative objects celebrating the American hero. French bronziers embraced Washington as a subject, yet few examples survive, and none rival the ambition of the present clock. While other period Washington clocks are held in prestigious institutions such as the White House, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Yale University Art Gallery and the Baltimore Museum of Art, this exceptional example occupies a category of its own, representing one of the most important tributes to Washington ever created in French decorative arts.

28" high x 24" wide x 9 1/2" deep
M.S.
