A product of Regency ingenuity, this dish is crafted with the utmost intricacy in a manner one would expect from a sterling counterpart. The rich acanthus leaf motif extends from the scrolling feet and handles to the rims and even the finial to give this vessel a truly luxurious touch. The serving dish, which could be used for a variety of delectable meats, is complete with its original dome cover and a removable liner that allowed the base to be filled with hot water to keep the entrée piping hot at the table.

When introduced nearly 275 years ago by Sheffield cutler Thomas Boulsover in 1743, Sheffield silver plate, also known as "Old Sheffield plate" or simply "Sheffield plate", offered consumers a more affordable alternative to sterling silver. Its sturdy nature and ease of decoration allowed the beauty of silver to be enjoyed beyond the world of the wealthy, effectively making Sheffield silver plate the most successful silver substitute in history.

At first glance, sterling silver and Sheffield plate may look identical since Sheffield is plated with sterling. Unlike sterling, which is hammered or rolled from an ingot of silver blended with other metal alloys, Sheffield plate consists of a sheet of silver, about 1/8-inch thick, fused on top of an ingot of copper, which is then flattened to a malleable sheet of metal; in this state, the two metals act as one, expanding in unison.

Engraved on the lid are the crest and coat of arms of most likely of the Jervis-White family with the motto "Venale Nec Auro" or "Not to be Bribed with Gold."

Circa 1825

25” wide x 20” deep x 16” high
M.S. The lineal representative of the Chesters of Royston and Cokenhatch, Hertfordshire, he was the son of the elder Sir Robert Chester Esq., who served as a Deputy Colonel of the Hertfordshire Militia before his death in 1790. Chester, the son, entered the service of the Hertfordshire Militia as Ensign in 1793 and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, which he held until 1804. In 1794 he was appointed Gentleman Usher Quarterly Waiter to King George III, and he then filled subsequent roles in the King's court. In 1796, he was promoted to Gentleman Usher of the Privy Chamber and Assistant Master and Master of Ceremonies to King George III. In 1797, he was Groom of the Privy Chamber and in 1798 Gentleman Usher of the Privy Chamber. He was later promoted to the Office of Master of Ceremonies and received the honor of knighthood. The Regiment then became known as the 16th Regiment of Foot. By 1881, the militia amalgamated with the Bedfordshire Militia, and the Bedfordshire Regiment of Foot and the Regiment became the 16th Bedfordshire Regiment of Foot. Crafted of fine golden oak, the suite features eight dining chairs, a versatile dining table, a vitrine, a sideboard, a buffet and a chest that holds the leaves of the dining table. Each piece is detailed with a myriad of lavishly hand-carved figures, including winged lions, fanciful masks, dragons and maidens. The dining table was surely crafted with flexibility in mind, as inside the accompanying chest are nine leaves which allow the table to expand an additional seven feet in length from its original square dimensions. In terms of size and craftsmanship, this suite is a shining example of Victorian furniture.

The period between 1880 and 1920 is often regarded as the “golden age” of American furniture craftsmanship, not only for the quality of the pieces, but also for the characteristic golden lacquers applied to finished furnishings. Overall prosperity following the American Civil War gave rise to wealthier families, larger homes and, hence, a desire for larger, more ornate furnishings for those homes.

Oak became popular during this time, due to a shortage of available walnut. In particular, the New York firm of Robert J. Horner is known for creating some of the greatest, handcrafted oak furnishings of this period. Horner was a clerk at a curtain shop before opening his furnishing business in 1885. Although the firm lasted only 30 years, the pieces that were produced during that time displayed high-level carving and handmade craftsmanship that was seldom seen during the Victorian Age, which was largely marked by mechanized work and industrialism. Today, items crafted by Horner are highly desirable and sought by collectors of premium Victorian furniture.

Circa 1885

Chairs: 19 1/2” wide x 47 3/4” high
Table (without leaves): 53” wide x 53” length x 30 1/4” high
Table (with leaves): 140 1/2” length
Sideboard: 74 1/2” wide x 25 3/4” deep x 48” high
Buffet: 44” wide x 18” deep
Vitritne: 55 1/2" wide x 19 1/2" deep x 81 3/4" high
Leaf Chest: 54 1/2" wide x 21" deep x 21" deep

M.S. These multi-purpose pieces meant to facilitate a new dining style where guests helped themselves, rather than being served by butlers or footmen. In 1750, Dr. Wall and his partner, the apothecary William Davis, discovered a method for making quality porcelain. With the financial assistance of 13 local businessmen, the pair established a factory at Warmstry House, Worcester, with the understanding by all parties to keep the formula of the porcelain a secret. By 1755, Worcester was making the best blue and white English porcelain wares ever created. This bowl is a rare survivor of this early period and remains in excellent condition.

Circa 1755-1774

Before the discovery of Wall and Davis, only the artisans of the Far East, who were masters of the art form, held the secret formula for creating porcelain. In the 1750s, everything Oriental was at the height of fashion in England. Porcelain wares were often imported at a hefty price, which stimulated the desire for English domestic porcelain production. Early attempts to re-create the medium were unsuccessful, often resulting in porcelain-like substances that were highly unstable and could easily crack with changes in temperature. One of only a handful known from the firm, this table illustrates the Victorian era's quest to combine technical innovation with superb and beautiful craftsmanship. Complete with its original leaves, the table’s circular top is formed from eight separate segments. When the top is rotated, an ingenious swivel mechanism causes the sections to diverge, allowing a set of small or large leaves to be inserted for an adjustable increase in size.

The design for the table was patented by Robert Jupe in 1835, who had envisioned “an improved expanding table so constructed that the sections composing its surface may be caused to diverge from a common center and that the spaces caused thereby may be filled up by inserting leaves or filling pieces.” The first of these fascinating tables were created between 1835 and 1840 during his partnership with John Johnstone and their firm of Johnstone, Jupe & Co. in London. Jupe left the company in 1840, after which the firm changed its name due to a new partnership and became Johnstone & Jeanes. The firm would eventually achieve international fame for its remarkable designs, exhibiting a "circular table...made on the expanding principle" like this one at the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Jupe was not alone in his fascination with combining the technical merits of engineering and mechanics with the more artful pursuit of cabinet making. Its incredible high-relief motif depicting the classical muse of Poetry is uncanny in its similarities to those created in the same timeframe by Elkington's most renowned goldsmith and designer, Léonard Morel-Ladeuil, who is known to have created only 35 masterworks during his professional career. Amplifying the importance of this salver is the presence of the monogram "EO de R," a cipher engraved upon the personal objects belonging to the legendary Rothschild family.

The most successful and accomplished gold and silver designers of the 19th century were French, and Ladeuil, in particular, was regarded as the greatest living practitioner of his craft. He was trained by the famed French silversmith Antoine Vechte, from whom he learned the art of repoussé that is so eloquently showcased in this salver. Measuring nearly two feet in diameter, the tray features a distinctive Renaissance-inspired theme of Poetry. Its styling and workmanship, particularly the circular scene at the center, are nearly identical to Ladeuil's famed Helicon Vase, which was given to Queen Victoria by her household on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 1887. That centerpiece was originally displayed by Elkington & Co. at the Vienna International Exhibition of 1873, an event at which the firm gained considerable praise, particularly for the masterworks executed by Ladeuil's hand. The Helicon centerpiece is now part of the British Royal Collection Trust.

Ladeuil began working for Elkington in 1859, soon after gaining his freedom from apprenticeship. The firm's primary objective for the gifted artisan was to utilize his talents to create grand, intricate works for display at exhibitions and for only the most important special commissions. The designer and goldsmith's subject of choice for his works were based upon the themes of antiquity, each executed with an amazing level of precision and eye for detail known to only true masters of gold and silversmithing.

It is no surprise that the work of such a respected and talented craftsman would attract the attention of the iconic Rothschild family. It is known that Elkington created specially commissioned wares for the family, including an extensive Victorian silver flatware service that bears the very same cipher present upon the present salver. (Christie's London, November 25, 2003, Lot 339) The English branch of the illustrious Rothschild banking family was founded in 1798 by Nathan Mayer von Rothschild, who was one of five brothers sent to cities across Europe by their father, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, in the hopes of establishing a banking empire. Known for their impeccable taste as well as for their financial genius, the Rothschilds have built what many consider to be one of the most impressive art collections in the world. Their palatial homes have housed some of the finest artwork, silver, porcelain, and even butterflies and stamps. This remarkable salver is an excellent example of the Rothschild's eye for quality and design.

Since the majority of Elkington's output was intended to bolster the importance of their prized electroplating process, few of the mere 35 Ladeuil creations are made entirely of sterling silver, further increasing the importance of this salver. Today, Ladeuil's works are prominently displayed in prestigious museums and collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Royal Collection Trust, Musée d'Orsay and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

2" high x 22 1/4" diameter
M.S.
