A product of Regency ingenuity, this dish is crafted with the utmost intricacy in a manner one would expect from a sterling counterpart. The rich acanthus leaf motif extends from the scrolling feet and handles to the rims and even the finial to give this vessel a truly luxurious touch. The serving dish, which could be used for a variety of delectable meats, is complete with its original dome cover and a removable liner that allowed the base to be filled with hot water to keep the entrée piping hot at the table.

When introduced nearly 275 years ago by Sheffield cutler Thomas Boulsover in 1743, Sheffield silver plate, also known as "Old Sheffield plate" or simply "Sheffield plate", offered consumers a more affordable alternative to sterling silver. Its sturdy nature and ease of decoration allowed the beauty of silver to be enjoyed beyond the world of the wealthy, effectively making Sheffield silver plate the most successful silver substitute in history.

At first glance, sterling silver and Sheffield plate may look identical since Sheffield is plated with sterling. Unlike sterling, which is hammered or rolled from an ingot of silver blended with other metal alloys, Sheffield plate consists of a sheet of silver, about 1/8-inch thick, fused on top of an ingot of copper, which is then flattened to a malleable sheet of metal; in this state, the two metals act as one, expanding in unison.

Engraved on the lid are the crest and coat of arms of most likely of the Jervis-White family with the motto "Venale Nec Auro" or "Not to be Bribed with Gold."

Circa 1825

25” wide x 20” deep x 16” high
M.S. The magnificent piece features a base carved from statuary marble in the shape of a stylized dolphin, which relates to Chambers' extraordinary 18th-century architectural designs. A marvel of beauty and craftsmanship, the tazza is also inset with specimens of Derbyshire Blue John in both the plinth and bowl. Blue John is one of the most in-demand decorative stones in the world, and its inclusion in this piece elevates the tazza to a true Georgian masterpiece.

Due to its popularity, the largest veins of Blue John had disappeared by the early 19th century, and only a small amount of the stone remains today. Because of its scarcity, most examples of Blue John furniture feature only small inset veneers. By contrast, this rare tazza features not one, but two substantial specimens of the stone. It represents some of the last ornamental wares created of such grand size and proportion, though other smaller examples still grace the stately British estates of Chatsworth, Hardwick, Kedleston and Haddon, among others.

Not only does this tazza boast a highly rare material, but it was also designed by one of the most important architects and designers of the Georgian era. Sir William Chambers was a Scottish-Swedish architect based in London who was active during the reigns of Kings George II and George III. Celebrated for his combination of English Palladianism with French Neoclassicism, he published several design treatises during his lifetime and built houses for British nobility. The dolphin design of this tazza embodies his complex yet conservative style. Similar dolphin designs can be found in Chambers' The Franco-Italian Album, a large group of drawings by the architect currently held by the Victoria & Albert Museum. Dolphins also appear on the British Royal Family's Gold State Coach, which was designed by Chambers and built in 1762 for George III.

Hardstone furnishings such as this were popular among the British aristocracy during the 18th century, and connoisseurs actively sought out the most gifted artisans from which to commission these exquisite masterworks. This particular tazza hails from an important titled British estate, for which it was specially designed and commissioned. Today, it stands as a stunning example of both Georgian artistry and the natural beauty of Blue John.

Circa 1780

18 1/2" diameter x 17 1/4" high
M.S. Showcasing the celebrated painter’s mastery of light and atmosphere, the oil is a captivating example of Grimshaw's meticulously rendered evening subjects. While the majority of the artist’s works depict moon-washed cities and the fishing villages of Britain, the location of this piece is the British countryside, giving it a sense of romance that would have resonated with its Victorian audience.

Born in Leeds the son of an ex-policeman, Grimshaw began painting while he was employed as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway. In 1861 he left his job to pursue a career as a full-time artist. By 1870, he was successful enough to rent Knostrop Hall, a 17th-century mansion near Temple Newsam, which is featured in many of his paintings. His continued success enabled Grimshaw to build a house in Scarborough and to rent a studio in Chelsea.

His early paintings of still lifes and local landscapes were executed with a precision reminiscent of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood’s ideals. Later in his career, he turned his attention to moonlit urban scenes. He was fascinated by the relatively new art of photography and often used a camera obscura in developing his compositions. He strove relentlessly to perfect his own very individual vision. John Atkinson Grimshaw died on October 31, 1893, leaving three sons, Arthur, Louis and Wilfred, and a daughter, Elaine, who also became artists. Grimshaw’s work can now be seen in galleries all over the world including the Tate Gallery in London and the Leeds Museum.

Canvas: 20” high x 30” wide
Frame: 33 1/2” high x 43 1/2” wide
M.S. The colorful and decorative stone was even worked into columns in some of the finest houses in Great Britain, most notably Chatsworth, home of the Duchess of Devonshire. The name ‘Blue John’ is thought to originate from the French term bleu et jaune, meaning blue and yellow. The largest veins of Blue John had disappeared by the early 19th century and today only two working Blue John Stone mines remain, producing only a miniscule amount of the precious stone. The small amount that remains is buried in the veins of limestone which reside deep within Treak Cliff Cavern and Blue John Cavern. Only 0.25 tons of the stone is extracted annually, and is sparingly reserved for small objects and jewelry.
M.S. Set in their Regency-period mahogany stands, each globe has aged to a beautiful patina. In 1750, Dr. Wall and his partner, the apothecary William Davis, discovered a method for making quality porcelain. With the financial assistance of 13 local businessmen, the pair established a factory at Warmstry House, Worcester, with the understanding by all parties to keep the formula of the porcelain a secret. By 1755, Worcester was making the best blue and white English porcelain wares ever created. This bowl is a rare survivor of this early period and remains in excellent condition.

Circa 1755-1774

Before the discovery of Wall and Davis, only the artisans of the Far East, who were masters of the art form, held the secret formula for creating porcelain. In the 1750s, everything Oriental was at the height of fashion in England. Porcelain wares were often imported at a hefty price, which stimulated the desire for English domestic porcelain production. Early attempts to re-create the medium were unsuccessful, often resulting in porcelain-like substances that were highly unstable and could easily crack with changes in temperature. With the recent boost in popularity of tea as the beverage of choice, these inferior precursors proved unsuitable, further fueling the demand for better alternatives. Wall and Davis were able to secure the most talented artisans to decorate their new invention, in the forms popularized by Eastern and German porcelain contemporaries, and their discovery secured England's place among the greatest centers of porcelain production.
M.S. This masterwork was painted in Bath in 1766, during one of the most significant artistic periods of Gainsborough's career. Just three years later, in 1769, he was invited to become a founding member of the Royal Academy, one of the highest honors a British painter could achieve. With its fluidity of line and boldness of color, Portrait of Francis Bennett (1712-1790) reveals the artist's shift away from the more realistic style of his early output toward the elegant grandeur that characterizes his later oeuvre.

Francis Bennett, like Gainsborough himself, prospered thanks to the huge expansion of Bath as a spa town in the 18th century. Born in Bath in 1712, he established himself as a linen and wool draper who counted the elite of the town—including Gainsborough himself—among his clientele. A slightly earlier portrait of Bennett in a blue waistcoat was formerly in the collection of the late Viscount Cowdray at Cowdray Park.

Born in 1727 in Suffolk, Gainsborough was the leading portrait painter of the 18th century, alongside Sir Joshua Reynolds, his main rival. Though Gainsborough originally set up his studio in Ipswich in 1752, he later moved to Bath, where he achieved considerable success. A favorite of the aristocracy as a portrait painter, Gainsborough was equally at home painting landscapes and pastoral idylls, presenting nobility, the working class and nature with the same extraordinary technical precision. Gainsborough’s ability to capture his subjects’ personalities, imbuing them with an emotive poetry, set him apart from his contemporaries. His portraits belong to the world's most prestigious museums, including the Louvre, the National Gallery in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and many more.

This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the portraits of Thomas Gainsborough currently being prepared by Dr. Hugh Belsey.

Circa 1766

Canvas: 30 1/8” high x 25” wide (76.52 x 63.50 cm)
Frame: 36 3/4” high x 32” wide x 3" deep (93.35 x 81.28 x 7.62 cm)

Provenance:
Thomas Agnew & Sons, London, by 1899
Jointly owned by Agnew’s and Wallis & Son, 1903
Agnew’s half share sold to Wallis & Son on June 2, 1910
Galerie D Heinemann, Munich, 1918 and 1928
Private collection, Amsterdam, 1995-2005
M.S. The talent and genius of Thomas Chippendale's designs dominated the furniture styles of the 18th century. He was the first person to amass such a strong following that an entire style bears his name and not that of a monarch, and cabinets such as this demonstrate his lasting influence on English cabinetmakers.

The son of a Yorkshire cabinetmaker, Thomas Chippendale quickly excelled in the family business. By the age of 36, he owned a series of workshops throughout England and an expansive timber yard for harvesting the finest woods. In 1754, Chippendale published The Gentleman and Cabinetmaker's Director, considered the “bible” of furniture design of its day. The book contained over 161 plates with an astounding range of furniture in the Gothic, Chinese and Rococo styles.
