Beautifully and accurately crafted, these highly detailed maps of the earth and skies would have been indispensable instruments of learning and business in the days of exploration. The terrestrial globe provides the most current geographical information of the time, including facts discovered during expeditions to the North Pole, while the celestial globe provided a timeless map of the heavens, an essential tool in shipping. Set in their Regency-period mahogany stands, each globe has aged to a beautiful patina. John Cary and his brother William collaborated in the late 18th century to create some of the finest globes in the world. Their expert design and craftsmanship soon allowed them to take command of the English globe-producing market.

The terrestrial globe is inscribed “CARY’S NEW TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, Delineated from the Best Authorities Extant; Exhibiting the Late Discoveries towards the NORTH POLE and every improvement in Geography to the present Time, LONDON; Published G. & J. Cary, St. James Street, March 15th 1821.” The celestial globe is inscribed within a rectangular label, “CARY’S NEW CELESTIAL GLOBE ON WHICH are correctly laid down upwards of 3500 stars, Selected from the most accurate observations, and calculated for the Year 1800, With the exient of each Constellation precisely defined by Mr. Gilpin of the ROYAL SOCIETY/Made and Sold by J. & W. Globe makers often made celestial models in advance, since the stars and constellations were considered established and unchanging. New lands were constantly being discovered around the world, and terrestrial models were almost always “made to order” to ensure updated accuracy. This distinguished pair represents an exceptionally rare find. The remarkable machine, crafted by the renowned Leipzig firm of Ludwig Hupfeld, is one of the most mechanically complex music players ever made, boasting three self-playing violins accompanied by a self-playing piano. Once made to entertain patrons of upscale hotels, restaurants and cafes, these extraordinary machines have become increasingly rare, with only 63 still in existence today.

A large step above the popular mechanical piano of the day, the Phonoliszt-Violina was expensive to produce and therefore was only available to the most exclusive clientele. The necessity for its expense is evident when considering the astonishing complexity of the instrument. Three violins playing strings tuned to D, A and E are bowed by a circular 1,350-strand horsehair bow cage, while a cross-strung Rönisch pianoforte accompanies the strings. Remarkably, both the piano and the violins are dynamic, allowing for a previously unheard-of range of volume and tone. From the most delicate pianissimo to a crashing fortissimo, the unparalleled instrument has the ability to render musical pieces with all of the skill and vigor of a real musician. Over 900 music rolls were created for the Phonoliszt-Violina over the decades, of which 50 rolls are included with the present machine.

The firm of Ludwig Hupfeld was established in Leipzig in 1892, when Ludwig Hupfeld, an accomplished musician, mechanic and businessman, acquired the musical instrument manufacturers J.M. Grob & Co. The firm quickly rose in popularity as its mechanical instruments grew more and more complex. Products made by the firm included various piano-playing machines and orchestrions. The idea of creating an automatic violin came to Hupfeld in 1900, and by 1907, the firm displayed the Klavier mit Streichton, or piano with string tone, at the Leipzig Autumn Trade Fair. Designed and patented in 1780 by one of history’s greatest inventors, James Watt, the copying machine was the only device in the 18th century that was able to duplicate letters; this particular model was also among the first portable copying machines ever made.

James Watt (1736-1819) is considered one of the greatest inventors of all time. Legendary today for his work on the steam engine, he spent much of his later life devising small inventions such as this. Anecdotally, the idea for the machine was a result of Watt tirelessly copying correspondence between himself and his business partner, the great silversmith Matthew Boulton. The machine itself was ingenious in its simplicity. The letter to be copied was written in a special gelatinous ink and then placed over a piece of tissue paper. Pressure from the roller impressed upon the tissue paper a mirrored replica of the letter, which could then be reversed and read from the opposite side.

Patented in 1780, the device was eagerly sought by important businessmen and statesmen alike. By the end of the first year of production, over 630 machines had been sold, and for the next century, Watt’s machine and the replicas it inspired dominated the copying business. Although many were sold in the 18th century, this is the first working model we have ever seen for sale.

Perhaps the most enthusiastic and well-known user of the machine was George Washington, who utilized this exact version of the copying machine. His device can still be found to this day on display at Mount Vernon. Thomas Jefferson was another avid user, who owned several versions - even one of his own design - and is said to have used it daily. Jefferson extolled the benefits of the copying machine to his friend and eventual presidential successor, James Madison, as well as Charles Willson Peale. One of Jefferson’s machines, a later model, is still held and prominently displayed at his Monticello home.

The present piece is housed in its original mahogany lap desk, which is in and off itself a remarkable work of craftsmanship. Designed for transport, each piece can be dismantled and stored away in its various storage drawers. These compartments also contain writing tools, including an ink bottle and damping box. Designed down to the smallest detail, the full extent of Watt’s genius is evident in this remarkable machine.

Silver oval label impressed “J. Watt & Co. The eight-day timepiece has a triple fusee movement with both ten bells and five gongs, and the internal movement weighs an incredible 80 pounds — nearly ten times larger than an average bracket clock. Uniquely, this timepiece is not a pendulum clock and instead utilizes a balance wheel escapement, which is extremely rare for a clock of this size. Every detail of the movement, including the beautifully hand-engraved backplate, demonstrates painstaking attention to detail.

The exterior of the clock adds further visual interest. The lustrous ebonized body is accented by elegant gilt bronze, forming scrolling acanthus leaves, five crowned finials and mask motifs. Heavily decorated with rich engravings and proverbs in old Slavic lettering, this service is a grand symbol of celebration and a testament to the beauty of Russian Imperial silver.

The punch set, a standalone treasure in its own right, was gifted by Czar Alexander III to Captain Wiggins in recognition of his pioneering expedition along the Yenisei River. Driven by a desire to establish a sea route with Siberia, Captain Wiggins’ journey is notable for being the first successful endeavor by a British seaman in 300 years to extend commercial interests with the northern coasts of Russia. Even more notable is the presentation of this elaborate gift by the Russian government to a foreign national, particularly when the British government all but ignored Wiggins' efforts. In fact, the British government refused his modest request for surveying and observational instruments. Even so, the Czar was impressed, and chose to honor Wiggins with this exceptional punch service — as pictured and discussed in Henry Johnson’s book Captain Joseph Wiggins, written in 1907.

The service was commissioned by the Czar from the House of Sazikov, the oldest silversmith and jewelry firm in Russia. Sazikov was established in 1793 by the merchant Pavel Sazikov, and became supplier to the Imperial Court in 1837. The firm, which maintained factories in Moscow and St. Petersburg, became renowned for its high quality silverware, silver sculptures, cloisonné enamels and statuettes with national motifs. The firm exhibited several cups and centerpieces at the Great Exhibition of 1851 in London, and from 1846, held the Imperial Warrant.

The unique charm of this punch service lies not only in its craftsmanship and historical relevance, but also in the inclusion of old drinking proverbs in Slavic. From "The heart burns at the thought of wine" to "Good fellowship is better than wealth," these sayings — inscribed on the cups and ladles of the set — add a touch of cultural richness and reflect the convivial spirit of the meeting. Further inscriptions offer credit to Wiggins for his endeavors. The edge of the tray is inscribed by the Russian Naval Ministry and reads: “To Captain Wiggins from the Imperial Russian Naval Ministry. In memory of the voyage in 1893 to the mouth of the river Enisei, jointly with the ships of the Imperial fleet, Lieutenants Ovtsyn, Malygin and Skuratov.” The center of the tray features another laudatory inscription from the Royal Geographic Society: “This salver was presented to Captain Joseph Wiggins, F.R.G.S., Siberian explorer, by the Czar of Russia, 1894, and left by Captain Wiggins to the Royal Geographical Society, England, Sept. 1905.”

Hallmarked 1874-75

9" high x 19 7/8" diameter on tray

Provenance:
Czar Alexander III
Private collection of Captain Wiggins
Royal Geographical Society, England
Private collection of Victor Niederhoffer
M.S.
