Depicted with her eyes gazing from beneath a gauzy polka-dot veil, his auburn-haired sitter embodies the youth, vitality and sophistication Domergue’s compositions are known for. The woman is exceedingly poised, focused on the performance, her brightly rouged lips parted in concentration. A well-heeled man sits beside her, peering into opera glasses. The slender, modern woman of La loge exudes confidence and style, displaying the qualities of Domergue's work that earned him the reputation of “inventor of the pin-up.”

Born in Bordeaux in 1889, Domergue studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. He was only 17 years old when he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français for the first time, winning the Prix du Rome in 1911 and a gold medal in 1920. While landscapes dominated his early oeuvre, from the 1920s he changed his focus to what would become his trademark subject, la belle Parisienne. Domergue enjoyed a tremendously successful career. From 1955 until 1962 he was the curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, organizing exhibitions of the works of van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec and Goya, among others. Domergue was appointed a Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur and also served as a Fellow of the Academy of Fine Arts.

Early 20th century

Panel: 21 1/2“ high x 18 1/8” wide
Frame: 28 1/2" high x 25" wide x 1 1/2" deep
M.S. The triangular-shaped, brilliant-cut Paraiba is certified by the Gemological Institute of America as originating in Brazil and being completely untreated, meaning its striking blue color is entirely nature-made. Pink and white diamonds totaling 0.66 carat complement the vivid central gemstone, and the jewels are set in classic platinum.

Only first discovered in 1989, the Paraiba tourmaline is one of the world’s rarest and most vibrant gemstones. Even rarer than diamonds, these extraordinary stones have only been found in the copper-rich mines of Brazil, Nigeria and Mozambique. It is thanks to their rare chemical composition that these gems owe their spectacular coloring and neon-bright glow that appears to light the stone from within.

Download the GIA Certification
M.S. The weapon features a sophisticated snaphaunce lock mechanism, an advanced flint-and-steel ignition system that preceded the later flintlock design, showcasing the cutting-edge military technology of its era.

The hefty two-stage smoothbore barrel transitions from octagonal at the breech to round toward the dramatically flared muzzle. Blunderbusses proved ideal for close-range defense during an era plagued by highway robbery and constant warfare, offering quick reloading capabilities whether on horseback, in coaches or aboard ships, while delivering a devastating, scattered shot at close range.

The firearm displays extraordinary Baroque artistry throughout. The lock plate presents an engraved nude female figure with a hound and a bird amid floral scrollwork, signed "Acqua Fresca," while the breech bears Mutti's engraved signature amid shamrock motifs. Functional elements become sculptural: the hammer forms a bearded face and the jaw screw hides beneath a carved mask. The briarwood stock showcases engraved silver furniture, including a hunting trophy sideplate, decorated butt plate and trigger guard with crowned shield, plus practical elements like a saddle ring and original ramrod.

Gironimo Mutti ranked among the premier barrel-makers working at Gardone, near Brescia, whose expertly forged barrels were highly sought after for deluxe firearms. "Acqua Fresca" is the pseudonym of Matteo Cecchi of Bargi, a master gunsmith celebrated for his unparalleled skill in relief-chiseled steel engraving. Working from his remote hamlet near Bologna yet serving an elite clientele—including the Medici rulers of Florence—Cecchi exemplified the extraordinary artistry that defined Italian firearms of this golden age.

4 1/2“ high x 3 1/2” wide x 35 1/2“ long
M.S.
