Dating back to the medieval period and formalized in London and other assay offices, this system ensured that silver met strict purity standards. During the 18th century, the Georgian period marked a golden age of English silver, with silversmiths producing refined hollowware such as teapots, tankards and serving pieces characterized by balance and proportion. The Victorian era introduced greater variety and ornamentation, with more elaborate forms and decorative motifs. Throughout these periods, English silver maintained a reputation for precision, craftsmanship and consistency, making it a cornerstone of antique silver collecting.

How to Identify English Sterling Silver

Collectors interested in English silver benefit from understanding the hallmarking system, which provides detailed information about each piece. Standard English silver marks typically include a lion passant indicating sterling purity, a city mark identifying the assay office, a date letter corresponding to the year of production and a maker’s mark representing the silversmith or workshop. These marks allow collectors to accurately date and attribute pieces, making English silver one of the most traceable categories within antique silver. In addition to hallmarks, quality can be assessed through weight, craftsmanship and design, with well-made pieces demonstrating precise construction and refined detail.

Important English Silversmiths and Makers

English silver is associated with many important silversmiths whose work continues to define the field. Scott and Smith jointly ran workshops located in Greenwich from 1802 to 1807, and during their brief partnership they were the principal suppliers of silver masterpieces to Rundell, Bridge & Rundell, the official “Jeweller, Gold and Silversmiths to the Crown.” Working on the cusp of the late Georgian and early Regency periods, the works of Scott and Smith often feature elements of the Neoclassical style, such as the pierced grapevines in these tazze, all crafted in exquisite, sumptuous detail. The firm’s royal commissions also include the Duke of York baskets, created for King George III's second son, Frederick Augustus (1763-1827), which are currently on display at the Powerhouse Museum (Sydney).

12” diameter x 3 1/4” high
M.S. Applied and engraved decoration envelop this masterpiece equipped with a carved handle, lion's head spigot and spectacular lion's paw supports. The piece bears the arms of the Neave Baronetcy and those of Digby, for Sir Thomas Neave and his wife Frances Caroline, daughter of the Hon. William Digby, the Dean of Durham.

Though he held no formal title, Storr enjoyed patronage from the most important and powerful figures of the period, including King George III and the Prince of Wales, the future King George IV. His first major work was a gold font commissioned by the Duke of Portland in 1797, and in 1799 he created the “Battle of the Nile Cup” for Lord Nelson. Many of Storr’s successes were partly due to the influence of Philip Rundell, of the popular silver retailing firm of Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell. Rundell’s firm nearly monopolized the early 19th-century market for superior silver, having obtained the Royal Warrant in 1806. A shrewd businessman, Rundell recognized the unique talents of Paul Storr and began pursuing him in 1803, but it wasn’t until after declining many offers that Storr finally joined the firm in 1806. Due to his remarkable talent, Storr was allowed to retain his own mark while working for Rundell.

Without question, Paul Storr is considered among history's finest smiths and he is known for perfecting the works, styles, and designs of the Regency period. Crafted during a period when coconuts were considered an extravagant novelty in England, this example is supported by highly decorative, engraved sterling silver that is in itself extremely precious. Silver objects from the 16th century are seldom found outside the confines of museums due to two historically significant events. The first occurred during the successful uprising of Oliver Cromwell against Charles I and Parliament in the mid-17th century. Cromwell decreed that all silver objects be surrendered to his forces and destroyed after discovering that his opposition was financed largely by silver. Later, the Great Fire of 1666 destroyed much of London, including a majority of its silver and the records of registered silversmiths. Pieces crafted prior to these tragic events are extremely scarce and highly desirable. This extraordinary goblet represents the small number of pre-Cromwellian English silver objects, especially from the 1500s, known to exist.

First popular in the late 15th and early 16th century throughout Europe, coconuts were once believed to possess healing powers and were used in cups such as this to detect and deter poison. As more trade routes opened up during the 16th century, coconuts became more widely available, though still only afforded to a wealthy minority in Europe and England. A cup such as this that has been so masterfully encased in sterling would most certainly have been in the possession of royalty or nobility. Similar silver-mounted coconut cups can be found in the most respected museum collections, including the Gilbert Collection.

Hallmarked London, 1589 with the maker’s mark ‘B’

2 7/8" diameter x 7 3/4" high
M.S. Dresser first displayed his designs at the 1862 International Exhibition in London, where he was introduced to Japanese decorative objects. That influence is apparent in the minimalistic design and clean curves of this tea set. Modern lines and shapes were the hallmarks of Dresser’s works, and this set embodies his famed aesthetic.

The grouping includes a teapot, sugar bowl and cream jug, all comprised of a spherical, electroplated body and all displaying Dresser’s signature clean lines and streamlined structure. Although made circa 1879, the set exudes modernity beyond its time, resembling designs that would become popular almost a century later.

Dresser made this set during his time with the firm of James Dixon and Sons, one of the leading British electroplate manufacturers of the Industrial Revolution. Its incredible high-relief motif depicting the classical muse of Poetry is uncanny in its similarities to those created in the same timeframe by Elkington's most renowned goldsmith and designer, Léonard Morel-Ladeuil, who is known to have created only 35 masterworks during his professional career. Amplifying the importance of this salver is the presence of the monogram "EO de R," a cipher engraved upon the personal objects belonging to the legendary Rothschild family.

The most successful and accomplished gold and silver designers of the 19th century were French, and Ladeuil, in particular, was regarded as the greatest living practitioner of his craft. He was trained by the famed French silversmith Antoine Vechte, from whom he learned the art of repoussé that is so eloquently showcased in this salver. Measuring nearly two feet in diameter, the tray features a distinctive Renaissance-inspired theme of Poetry. Its styling and workmanship, particularly the circular scene at the center, are nearly identical to Ladeuil's famed Helicon Vase, which was given to Queen Victoria by her household on the occasion of her Golden Jubilee in 1887. That centerpiece was originally displayed by Elkington & Co. at the Vienna International Exhibition of 1873, an event at which the firm gained considerable praise, particularly for the masterworks executed by Ladeuil's hand. The Helicon centerpiece is now part of the British Royal Collection Trust.

Ladeuil began working for Elkington in 1859, soon after gaining his freedom from apprenticeship. The firm's primary objective for the gifted artisan was to utilize his talents to create grand, intricate works for display at exhibitions and for only the most important special commissions. The designer and goldsmith's subject of choice for his works were based upon the themes of antiquity, each executed with an amazing level of precision and eye for detail known to only true masters of gold and silversmithing.

It is no surprise that the work of such a respected and talented craftsman would attract the attention of the iconic Rothschild family. It is known that Elkington created specially commissioned wares for the family, including an extensive Victorian silver flatware service that bears the very same cipher present upon the present salver. (Christie's London, November 25, 2003, Lot 339) The English branch of the illustrious Rothschild banking family was founded in 1798 by Nathan Mayer von Rothschild, who was one of five brothers sent to cities across Europe by their father, Mayer Amschel Rothschild, in the hopes of establishing a banking empire. Known for their impeccable taste as well as for their financial genius, the Rothschilds have built what many consider to be one of the most impressive art collections in the world. Their palatial homes have housed some of the finest artwork, silver, porcelain, and even butterflies and stamps. This remarkable salver is an excellent example of the Rothschild's eye for quality and design.

Since the majority of Elkington's output was intended to bolster the importance of their prized electroplating process, few of the mere 35 Ladeuil creations are made entirely of sterling silver, further increasing the importance of this salver. Today, Ladeuil's works are prominently displayed in prestigious museums and collections such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Royal Collection Trust, Musée d'Orsay and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

2" high x 22 1/4" diameter
M.S. In England, sterling silver often served as a form of currency, and a monumental jug of this size would have been crafted for an exceptionally wealthy individual. Two events in English history greatly reduced the quantity of important Elizabethan silver. During the English Civil War (1642-1651), most of the exquisite silver items that once adorned the tables of the wealthy and graced royal courts were melted down either by the Cromwell forces or by Cromwell’s enemies to pay the mercenaries to fight the invader. The second event that destroyed most of the period silver was the great fire of London which took place in 1666. Today, surviving examples of Oliver Cromwell (d. 1658) English silverwork are among the rarest and most sought-after items, each one a museum-quality discovery.

This exceptional silver Tigerware jug in Elizabethan style embodies the rare elegance and meticulous craftsmanship that characterized English silver during the reign of Queen Elizabeth.
