Vibrant and spontaneous, this multi-hued garden view follows in the rich tradition of Impressionist landscapes. Renowned for the vigor and vivacity of her brushwork, Lélia Pissarro possesses an intuitive understanding of light and color, which permeates her compositions and gives life to her canvases. This landscape, with its bursts of highly saturated color applied in a thick impasto with swift, crosshatched brushwork, approaches abstraction, reinvigorating the celebrated style that is her artistic legacy.

The fourth generation in a long line of famous painters, Lélia seemed destined to pick up the paintbrush. She was the third and youngest child of the artist H. Claude Pissarro and the great-granddaughter of the famed Camille Pissarro. Naturally, Pissarro learned her craft at an early age, primarily studying under her grandfather, the artist Paulémile Pissarro. She sold her first painting to New York art dealer Wally Findlay at the age of just 4, and she exhibited her first work at age 11 at La Jeune Peinture in Paris. She would go on to exhibit in cities throughout France, as well as in Israel, New York, Switzerland, Boston and London.
