Designed by the legendary engraver John Reich, the 1827 Capped Bust Dime is a classic in terms of iconography and design. This example is perhaps the finest example of this rare coin in existence. It is one of just two Capped Bust Dimes of any date to bear the "Specimen" designation, meaning that it is neither a Mint State nor a Proof issue. Instead, it has a distinctive finish that makes it wholly unique. The strike is bold, while the exceptionally well-preserved surfaces are Prooflike and offset beautifully by frosted devices.

The only other known Specimen Capped Bust Dime dates to 1837 and bears a 64 quality grade; the present example, by contrast, boasts a nearly perfect 68 grade, meaning its surface only bears very minor flaws. The overall effect is mesmerizing, making this dime the absolute best of its type.
