This Proof Liberty Head double eagle $20 gold coin is an extraordinary rarity of numismatics history. While the official mintage for the coin is 50 pieces, it is believed that fewer than a dozen of these coins remain in existence today. Designed by James Barton Longacre, the coin features a crowned profile of Lady Liberty on one side and the seal of the United States on the other, with the value "Twenty D." clearly marked on the obverse. Today, the value of this coin far exceeds its face value; it is one of the rare treasures of American coinage.

The proof coin is easily distinguished from its mint state counterpart by its extraordinary finish. Known as Ultra Cameo, proof coins feature a highly polished, mirror-like background with a matte raised profile, resulting in remarkable, eye-catching contrast and an extraordinary sense of depth. This example is further graded PR-65, meaning it is virtually unblemished with only hairline marks outside of the focal areas.

Production of the Liberty Head double eagles began in 1850, but very few remaining examples exist from its earliest years of production. Just one 1850 coin is currently known, and it resides in the Paris Mint Collection. Beginning in 1858, Mint officials made a concerted effort to market proof coinage to collectors. Indeed, that year saw the first sizable delivery of proof Double Eagles of the Type I design, although today only three or four pieces have survived. While production increased substantially the following year, the 1859 is exceedingly rare in proof format because many were unsold and subsequently melted. The same can be said for the remaining six issues in the proof Type I Double Eagle series, including this elusive 1864 Liberty Head double eagle proof.
