This exquisite enamel portrait miniature of the famed English satirist Dr. John Wolcot was created by his personal friend, the preeminent enamelist Henry Bone. Precise to the last detail with the care and attention afforded to a fine art masterpiece, this portrait features the physician-turned-burlesque poet, also known by the pseudonym "Peter Pindar," in his later years. The most successful and prolific satirist of the later 18th century, Wolcot left his career as a physician in 1778 to pursue a career as an art critic and satirist. Writing under the name Peter Pindar, Wolcot's favorite objects of humor were the royal family and the Royal Academy, an organization to which his friend Bone was an associate, and later, royal academician.

The official enamelist of Kings George III, George IV and William IV, Henry Bone is widely considered the greatest English enamel painter. Born in Cornwall, Bone gained his initial training in the art of enameling working for the Plymouth porcelain works adorning hard-paste pieces. In 1778, he moved to London and befriended Wolcot, who would encourage the artist to exhibit his work. By 1780, Bone exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy with great success, and by 1800, he was appointed the official enamel painter to the Prince of Wales, and continued to serve his patron through his reign as George III, as well as his successors Geoge IV and William IV.

This rare portrait was once part of the famed Twinight Collection of Royal Porcelain.
