Elegance and artistry distinguish this stunning tilt-top marquetry table hailing from the Caribbean island of Grenada. Crafted from veneers native to the West Indies and South America, the table features the inlay of St. George slaying the dragon, likely a homage to the patron saint of the Grenadian capital of St. George. The base boasts resplendent geometric parquetry that terminates in an exotic carved tripod base featuring the faces of a dog, a monkey and a cat rendered in magnificent detail.

Originally discovered by the Spanish in the late 15th century, Grenada was eventually claimed by the French and lastly by the English in 1763. Known as the "island of spice", Grenada became a thriving English colony bustling with merchants looking to make their fortunes in trade. With these wealthy businessmen also came beautiful homes that were in need of equally beautiful furnishings. Settlers soon realized that the native English furnishings they had brought with them did not fare well in the tropical locale, as these softer woods were susceptible to the ravages of heat, humidity, termites and woodworms. These merchants soon commissioned local craftsmen to create furnishings based upon then-current European decorative styles utilizing indigenous timbers. This trend gave rise to the category of uniquely Carribean furniture with a clear English air to which this table belongs.
