These tureens carry a prestigious history, having belonged to Edward Law, 2nd Baron Ellenborough and later to William D. Sloane, president of W.J. Sloane. The bottom of each tureen is engraved for Sloane, who married Emily Vanderbilt. A matching pair with the Lord Ellenborough arms and Sloane initials was sold at Christie’s London in 2006 for $70,000.
The tureens feature the arms of Edward Law, 2nd Baron Ellenborough. The arms, under a baron’s coronet, date the tureens between 1827 and 1844, before Law was elevated to Earl of Ellenborough. Edward Law held several prominent positions, including Governor-General of India and First Lord of the Admiralty. His distinguished career earned him many honors from Queen Victoria. These sauce tureens were also part of the iconic Red McCombs collection, which has been highly publicized and studied.
Revered among history's finest silversmiths, Paul Storr is celebrated for perfecting the works, styles and designs of the Georgian and Regency periods. His legacy encompasses a remarkable body of work spanning several stylistic eras with far-reaching influence. While primarily renowned for his masterpieces of Georgian and Regency silver in a distinctive neoclassical style, Storr was also highly accomplished in the earlier Rococo manner. Throughout his career, he maintained an unparalleled level of craftsmanship and superior quality that remains seldom seen since.
