He began his artistic studies at an early age at Prince Ferdinand's Drawing School in Aarhus, where he worked under the tutelage of the great landscape painter Andries Fritz. In 1875, he continued his studies at the Royal Academy of Art. It was there that he fell under the influence of artists such as Christen Købke and Pieter Christian Skovgaard. Their devotion to color and the romanticism of the Danish landscape would prove influential on the young painter.  \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e After completing his studies, Mønsted traveled extensively and often to Switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Italy, North Africa and the Mediterranean.
