This monumental 17th-century Flemish silver charger is adorned by heavy repoussé work depicting Alexander the Great and a mortally wounded King Darius III. The highly detailed battle scene is a celebration of the Baroque style that pervaded the Netherlands in the 17th century. At its center, the victorious Alexander covers his foe with a funerary cloth, a final show of respect for the felled leader. Armies flank the central figures on both sides; the horses and their riders are so convincingly rendered that they imbue the work with a sense of vitality and movement. A waved border incorporating trophies of war and flowering plants encircle the scene, resulting in a work of art that is a celebration of these two historic greats.

In 333 BC, King Darius III of Persia first encountered the powerful Alexander the Great and was defeated at the Battle of Issus. Fleeing from the disaster, Darius left his wife and family behind, who were reportedly treated well by Alexander the Great due to their royal stature. In 330 BC, the two foes met again in the Battle of Gaugamela, and the Persian army was yet again defeated by Alexander. Following the battle, Darius was poisoned by one of his own soldiers. Alexander found him lying wounded in his chariot, dying, and his last words were a message to the conqueror thanking him for graciously caring for his wife and children. This decisive battle gave Alexander the Great control of the entire Mediterranean coast.
