This masterpiece entitled An Evening at the Opera was painted by French artist Edgard de Montzaigle in the final years of the 19th century. The composition provides a tantalizing glimpse into Belle Époque Paris — Europe’s most dazzling and influential period since the Italian Renaissance — along with depictions of the artistic movers and shakers who made this period so important.
De Montzaigle set his scene in the famed theater of Paris’ La Comédie-Française. Against the bright, sweeping theater curtain, the audience enjoys the entr'acte interval. Dressed in formal evening attire, they chat amongst themselves, relaxed and unhurried. Even with the grand performance ongoing, however, the artist knew – and shares with his viewer – that the real show of the evening was the assemblage of opera-goers themselves. Within the crowd, a constellation of illustrious individuals stands out, from writers and artists to composers and poets who still remain household names. Much like Raphael, who captured the great artists of the Renaissance in his magnum opus The School of Athens, de Montzaigle has immortalized in portraiture many of the greatest creatives and politicians of his age. Artists Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Paul Cezanne and Camille Pissarro make appearances in the crowd, and the artist even captures Félix Faure, then the President of France, watching intently from the upper balcony. The composer Claude Debussy, the photographer Nadar and the novelist Marcel Prost all can be viewed. De Montzaigle's meticulous attention in rendering each individual's likenesses immerses the viewer in the vibrant intellectual and artistic scene of the late 19th century.
Born in Angoulême, France in 1867, Edgard de Saint-Pierre de Montzaigle completed his artistic training under famed French painter Jean Béraud. Many of Béraud’s artworks present a pageant of faces, and Montzaigle pays tribute to his teacher in An Evening at the Opera by including his face in the grouping of greats. A successful painter in his own right, de Montzaigle was a frequent exhibitor at the Paris Salon and won the prestigious bronze medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. His works remained treasured by collectors for their ability to capture the vivacity and glamour of Paris in La Belle Époque, often rendering fashionable Parisian women traversing the city’s bustling streets or attending the opera. An Evening at the Opera, painted in 1897, remains a standout in the artist’s oeuvre, offering a compelling glimpse into Paris’ golden age.
