Philip II, the father of the famed Alexander the Great, ruled Macedonia from 359 BCE until his death in 336 BCE. He led Macedon into a period of military success, gaining control over much of Classical Greece and defeating the Greek city-states of Athens and Thebes. His large-scale coinage in gold and silver aided in funding his military operations, and coinage in the ruler's name continued long after his reign ended in the northern territories of the Macedonian kingdom. Remembered for his effective combination of military prowess, diplomatic acuity and marriage alliances, Philip sought to consolidate power with Greece before turning his eyes to the final opponent — Ancient Persia. Though he would not live to see it, his son Alexander continued his father's battles, invading the Achaemenid Empire immediately following Philip's death.
