Annecy, la rotonde
(Annecy, the Rotunda)

Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower right)
Oil on canvas

This vividly-hued composition by French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro beautifully captures a waterside stroll on a clear day in Annecy in southeastern France, a town known for its quaint cobblestone streets and winding canals. The work is a stunning addition to the Pissarro family legacy, which began with Pissarro's Impressionist grandfather, the great Camille Pissarro. Boasting a vibrant Post-Impressionist style, this oil demonstrates Pissarro's remarkable talent for capturing the light and atmosphere of a scene in each and every feathery brushstroke. Under a turquoise-blue sky, Pissarro's landscape glistens with unmistakable brilliance as he deftly captures the serene beauty of nature.

The grandson of Camille Pissarro and son of painter Paulémile Pissarro, Pissarro seemed destined to pick up the paintbrush, and he did so at an early age. Primarily taught by his father, he exhibited his first works at the young age of 14, and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography, publishing to painting. His reputation as a painter quickly spread, resulting in a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored Impressionist works, which have been exhibited around the world and are highly collected.

The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
