This pastel-hued composition was painted by famed Spanish painter Eduardo Léon Garrido. A musical trio adds levity to the atmosphere as an elegantly dressed woman in a voluminous pink and blue gown enters a grand hall. The flowers scattered about the floor mirror the fresh blooms that adorn the front of her dress, and she carries a dainty handkerchief in her hand. Two onlookers, each similarly sumptuously dressed, gaze across the floor at the central figure. The male figure, rendered in a large powdered wig and crimson suit with a large neck scarf, gazes through a pair of opera glasses to gain an even better look at the fashionably dressed woman, who seems unbothered by the attention. Among Garrido's largest parlor paintings, At the Ball exudes Rococo romance and the refinement of Parisian high society.
Academically trained at La Escuela Superior de Pintura in Madrid, Eduardo Léon Garrido began his artistic training under the tutelage of Spanish Romantic painter Vincente Palmaroli. Following his initial successes and his reception of a scholarship from the Diputación of Madrid, the young Garrido moved to Paris where he began studying under Raimundo Madrazo. The artist often took the high society of 18th-century Paris as the subject of his paintings, and his distinctive Mannerist style added depth to his portraits of elegant women of the Belle Époque. Garrido exhibited widely in his lifetime, and examples of his paintings can be found in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga and the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao.
