I became fascinated with his sketches, daughters of what I call instantaneousness."
- Claude Monet, to his biographer Gustave Geffroy

This seascape masterpiece by Eugène Boudin stands as one of the most stunning examples of early Impressionism ever produced by the renowned artist. The artist is regarded as one of the most significant figures in the development of Impressionism in France. Along with the Barbizon painters, Boudin was among the first French landscape artists to paint mostly outdoors, establishing a new tradition of plein air painting in France and beyond.

His passion for the natural world inspired artists of all mediums, including Baudelaire and, perhaps most significantly, the Impressionists. In 1857, Boudin met Claude Monet, who spent several months working with him in and out of his studio. Responsible for introducing Monet to this method of painting en plein air, Boudin later joined Monet and his young friends in the first Impressionist exhibition in 1874.

Compositions such as Beaulieu, La baie des fourmis, Effet du matin exemplify why Eugène Louis Boudin is considered a master of his art. The landscape features the Bay of Ants in Beaulieu, France, a serene seascape with calm boats. Boudin’s affinity for nature and the sea began in his youth. Born into a seafaring family in Normandy, Boudin first gained exposure to plein air painting with the works of Barbizon painters Constant Troyon and Jean-François Millet, both of whom brought works to Boudin’s father’s frame shop.

Inspired, Boudin ventured to Paris at the age of 22 to begin painting exclusively. In 1850, he earned a scholarship that enabled him to take permanent residence in Paris, although he often traveled to paint in Normandy and, from 1855, made regular trips to Brittany. Boudin studied nature directly on the Normandy coast at the fashionable resorts of Deauville and Trouville. His seascapes and beach scenes were painted at many different times of the year and in a variety of changing weather conditions. Boudin's overriding concern was light, and in his dabs of pure color and loose and delicate brushwork, he prefigured Impressionism, marking the link between Corot and the Impressionists.

Boudin's growing reputation enabled him to travel extensively in the 1870s. He visited Belgium, the Netherlands, and southern France, and from 1892 to 1895, made regular trips to Venice. He continued to exhibit at the Paris Salon, receiving a third-place medal in 1881 and a gold medal at the 1889 Exposition Universelle. In 1892, Boudin was made a knight of the Légion d'honneur, a somewhat belated, but nevertheless significant recognition of his talents and influence on the art of his contemporaries. This work was created for the 1892 Salon, a triumphant follow-up to these crowning achievements.

Dated 1892

Canvas: 24" high x 34 3/4" wide (60.96 cm x 88.27 cm)
Frame: 30 1/8" high x 44" wide x 4 2/4" deep (76.52 cm x 111.76 cm x 12.07 cm)

Provenance:
Galerie Durand-Ruel et Cie., Paris (acquired from the artist, May 1892)
P.C.
