This French bisque porcelain bust of the great Napoléon Bonaparte is based upon the famed marble bust of Napoléon as Emperor by Antonio Canova. The striking "herm" form of the bust displays an elegant Neoclassical style that evokes the imperial portraits of ancient Rome. This association was of the utmost importance to Napoléon, as the emblems of power from antiquity became an integral part of his attempt to legitimize his reign by linking himself with the great rulers of the past, as well as to promote the arts and economy of France. Formed of refined white unglazed porcelain, the bust lends this historic figure a truly imperial appearance.
