Emeralds from Zambia are considered some of the most desirable in the world because of their deeply saturated color and excellent clarity, and this enormous emerald is joined by 1.82 carats of diamonds in a luxurious platinum setting.
The art of gem carving takes years to learn and master, and emeralds are notoriously difficult to carve. They polish well, but the artist must be extremely careful not to break the stone or carve away too much of the gem during the process. Whoever carved this exceptional ring was truly a master of their craft.
This carving’s floral motif is consistent with those used to adorn precious jewels during the Mughal Empire in South Asia that flourished from the early 16th to the mid-18th centuries, with emeralds being the favored gemstone of Mughal emperors.
