Oil on canvas
Edgar Hunt’s realistic paintings of tranquil rural life, distinguished by their meticulous attention to detail, placed the artist among the most accomplished painters of his day. Though he excelled in portraying many types of animals, he is best known for his depictions of chickens, as in the present work. Here, a group of chickens and their chicks peck around the barnyard, rendered by Hunt with both precision and personality. Celebrated for his straightforward, bucolic scenes with a high degree of finish, his style is immediately recognizable and thoroughly charming.
Born in 1876 in Birmingham, Hunt displayed a devotion to animals from an early age and originally planned to become a farmer before turning to painting. He came from a family of artists, including his father, Charles Hunt, a well-known genre painter, and brother Walter Hunt. Although he had no formal training (his only art instruction came from his father), he was able to translate his real-life experiences on his family farm into scenes of domestic livestock. A reserved, private man, Hunt seldom exhibited his work despite high demand from his patrons, but he did show at the Royal Society of Artists in London and the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
