Versatile and compact, this Chinese steelyard balance scale cane would have been used by merchants and tradesmen to weigh a wide variety of objects. Known as a type of unequal arm balance, the cane is suspended from the ropes and the item to be weighed is hung from the hook located on the shorter arm. The counterweight slides along the long arm (or in this case cane shaft) until the scale is balanced. Weights are delineated on the shaft, with the position of the counterweight along the shaft corresponding to the weight of the item in question.
