This rare system cane was once used by a customs agent to check the contents of incoming shipments of grain. The ingenious mechanism consists of two brass tubes that slide against one another to either open or close the three segments in the shaft. The cane is closed when it is inserted into the shipment, opened to take samples at three different levels, and then closed again before being removed. By examining the contents of the three segments located along the length of the shaft, the agent could ensure nothing illegal was hidden within. The function of the shaft is combined with the handsome decorative element of a handle formed from an antler.
