Oil on canvas

The art of fishing is celebrated in this oil on canvas by the great American painter Edgar Franklin Wittmack. Wittmack's cover illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post were each a resounding success with the American public, who were engrossed by his heroic and action-type scenes of distinctly American — and usually male — pastimes. This particular example graced the February 2, 1935, cover of the Post, and it is a celebration of the time-honored essence of the sport of fishing.

Wittmack possessed a remarkable talent for bringing to life the narrative of his paintings in a single scene. He utilized the perfect balance of detail with a graphic style to create his works, resulting in the eye-arresting images that were ideal for magazine cover art. His compositions tended toward male-centric subjects such as this — fishing, boating, cowboys, trains and even swordplay filled his vivid compositions. Simultaneously nostalgic and timeless, his works are exceptional examples of the art of illustration.

Born in New York City in 1894, Edgar Franklin Wittmack was the son of a chemist. He served in the Army in France during World War I, after which he returned to New York to work as a commercial illustrator while simultaneously taking art classes at the Art Students League. He was highly sought after as a cover artist for all of the major magazines throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including Collier's Magazine, Everybody's Magazine, Liberty, Outdoor Life, Scientific American and the Saturday Evening Post.
