Broad, energetic brushstrokes animate the churning water as the sharply modeled bow cuts through the swells. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e The painting was almost certainly created for reproduction in the British illustrated newspaper \u003cem\u003eThe Sphere\u003c\/em\u003e, for which Dawson produced numerous wartime naval images. Its grisaille palette was ideally suited to the black-and-white printing process used by illustrated periodicals of the era.
