Bailey Banks & Biddle was founded in Philadelphia in 1832 and was the first American jeweler to introduce the British Sterling Silver standard. American silversmiths at that time worked with silver of 90% purity, which is known as coin silver. Co-founder Joseph Trowbridge Bailey raised his standard to 92.5%, allowing his company’s silver to compete with the finest imports from around the world. The firm became one of the country’s best-loved makers of fine silver, receiving a commission from the U.S. Government to update the Great Seal of the United States. This design remains the official version of the seal today.
