This Victorian silverplate lap desk by Elkington & Co. combines artistry, craftsmanship and functionality. Adorned by neoclassical designs, including masks and cupids, the desk features cut glass inkwells and a figural candle holder at the center. The velvet-lined lid provides the ideal writing surface; it also lifts to reveal ample storage space within.

Elkington is renowned for pioneering and perfecting the process of electroplating. Founded in Birmingham in the 1840s, the firm soon thereafter earned Royal Warrants from numerous royal families, including Queen Victoria, King Edward and the King of Spain. They were also awarded the French Republic's highest honor, the Legion d'Honneur. This lap desk, exceptional in artistry and design, is representative of this esteemed firm's output.
