This exceptionally rare pair of English table lamps is crafted from converted 19th-century tea canisters. Tea caddies and canisters, used in China for centuries, were introduced to England in the mid-17th century. Like the tea leaves they contained, these items quickly became a popular luxury item, crafted in a range of Chinoiserie styles. In the present pair, two tea canisters have been transformed into the bases of electric table lamps. Retaining their original painted decoration with gilt Chinese figures and characters, they represent a charming relic of the English fervor for tea.
