Fleurs dans le parc
(Flowers in the Park)

Signed (lower left)
Oil on canvas

Combining varied passages of thick and thin paint, Victor Charreton masterfully captures the transparency of light in this airy oil on canvas. The artist utilizes his skillful eye to capture blooming flowers on a warm, still day. Charreton practically transports the viewer into the scene; the tranquility of the park and the softness of the petals are almost palpable.

Born on March 2, 1864 in Bourgoin-Jallieu, France, Victor Charreton was a French painter who carried on the legacy of the Impressionists with his lush depictions of the countryside. He studied law in Paris and worked as a practicing lawyer for many years before dedicating himself entirely to painting in 1902. In the decades that followed, Charreton traveled frequently throughout France and North Africa, during which time he produced a number of atmospheric winter scenes. He notably served as a professor at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1919 until 1925, and today his works are held in the collections of the Musée d’Orsay in Paris, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts among others.
