Conical pendulum mystery clocks are among the most fascinating timepieces in the world. Crafted with great artistic and mechanical skill, this particular example is one of the rarest on the market. All other known mystery clocks of this type are mantle clocks that measure upwards of 25 inches in height; by comparison, this exhibition-quality example is absolutely monumental, measuring over eight feet high atop its pedestal base. Today, this combination of artistic mastery and intricate mechanics makes these exceptionally rare, large-scale mystery clocks highly coveted.
The origin of the conical movement dates back to the 17th century when clockmaker Huygens published his version of the "horologium" in 1673. Then, 100 years later, the conical movement was put to practical use when it was incorporated to control a telescope by Passement of Paris. It was during the second half of the 19th century that the design of these fascinating movements flourished with the addition of artistic beauty by the hands of French sculptors, resulting in works of artistic beauty such as this.
