Skillful enameling and exquisite detailing distinguish this magnificent 18k gold cigarette case by the renowned French firm Maison G. Jacta. The box’s striking motif incorporates colorful floral garlands on the lid, surrounded by a field of rich crimson red enamel waves, and bordered by bright white enamel and golden rosettes. An 18k gold embossed pendant rests at its center, which captures two charming cherubs at play.

The cherub motif was a favorite of Maison Jacta, occurring in gold relief on boxes, nécessaires, brooches and cane handles. A similar cherub on a gold brooch is currently held in the collection of the British Museum in London. Such diminutive works of art are found most often in prestigious collections throughout the world, representing a bygone age of luxury and style.

The Parisian jewelry firm of Maison Jacta was established in 1848, opening up shop on the stylish Rue de la Paix. After earning critical acclaim at the universal exhibitions of 1855 and 1862, the house enjoyed the illustrious patronage of Princess Mathilde, Empress Eugénie and the Empress of Russia, among others. Exquisite in every detail, the present piece truly encapsulates the luxurious design and craftsmanship of this celebrated jeweler.

This rare case is pictured in French Jewelry of the Nineteenth Century by Henri Vever.
