This magnificent French sideboard is a work of both massive size and extraordinary craftsmanship. Carved entirely from luxurious mahogany, the bold piece of furniture reaches a width of over 8 feet and a height of over 7 feet and displays all of the abundance and richness of decoration that epitomizes Napoleon III-period design.

At its pinnacle is a stunning fruit motif, complete with trailing grapevines issuing forth and bordering the upper edges. The deeply carved grapevines, leaves, and flowers are accompanied by stunning high-relief Rococo elements and spiraling curves that flow along the edges of the frieze, lending the entire sideboard a breathtaking, architectural silhouette. The opulent carving extends to the lower panels, which feature motifs associated with the hunt, suggesting this sideboard was commissioned for a noble country estate or hunting lodge.

The natural warmth of the mahogany is enhanced by the rich brown-to-red patinated surface, which only accentuates the beauty and drama of the extraordinary piece. Interior paneling and perfectly fitted doors attest to the cabinet’s skillful construction, making it as practical as it is visually stunning. Masterfully crafted and beautifully maintained, this French sideboard is a rare find.
