This highly important 19th-century French naval surgeon’s kit by the famed manufacturer Charriere, Collin & Cie. includes all the instruments needed to conduct any and every known medical procedure necessary at sea. The complete set contains over 100 instruments for performing a wide variety of procedures, including general operations, amputations, catheterization, punctures and aspirations, tracheotomies and dentistry.

The French naval surgeon was the highest trained and most respected of all surgeons because he had to be able to perform every conceivable type of emergency surgery. As the only doctor on a ship at sea for months, he handled a range of ailments from common sicknesses and toothaches to serious wartime injuries and amputations. As a result, naval medical kits were among the most comprehensive and complete ever produced. To find a complete set in such excellent condition is extremely rare. Housed in its original case, this set offers a rare glimpse into the history of modern medicine.

It was also created by one of the most respected instrument-makers of the age. Joseph-Frédéric-Benoît Charrière was a Parisian instrument maker of much renown. Born in Switzerland in 1803, he moved to Paris at the age of 13 and established his own company by 1820. He gained French citizenship in 1843, and by his death in 1876, he was famous around the world for his developments in the medical field. Charrière's instruments were distinguished both by their quality of material and their ingenuity. He was eventually succeeded by his son and grandson, who renamed the firm Charrière, Collin & Cie. in 1870.

The case features a paper label on the lid reading "Composition de la Caisse complète d'Instruments de Chirurgie pour les Bâtiment de l'Etat par Collin a Cie, Fabricants d'Instruments de Chirurgie de la Faculté de Médecine de Paris. Mon Charrière" and listing a complete inventory of tools by category. The lock is also signed "Mon. Charrière Collin & Cie Paris."
