Bringing together strands of his hair and fragments of the red cedar funerary case that enclosed his casket in 1799, the display unites physical remnants of Washington’s life with those of his burial.

The strands originate from a larger lock of Washington’s hair given to Thomas Farmer in 1845 by a woman employed to braid the hair of Washington and Andrew Jackson into mourning jewelry. The cedar fragments come from a larger piece given to Timothy Hedges in 1831. Together, these relics illustrate the enduring reverence for Washington and the care with which generations preserved objects associated with him.

The relics are presented alongside reproductions of Washington’s signature and Gilbert Stuart’s celebrated 1796 Lansdowne Portrait, now housed in the National Portrait Gallery. Accompanying documentation includes a copy of a letter from Mrs. Paul Hedges, the wife of a Hedges descendant, tracing the history of the funerary case fragment.

Frame: 18" high x 22" wide x 1" deep
M.S.
