This remarkably detailed drawing of Sir Winston Churchill was drawn by British artist S.J. Marin at a critical juncture of World War II. Marin captures Churchill appearing stoic and determined with expertly shaded contours of Churchill's face under the shadows cast by the leader's signature Homburg hat. Marin wrote a detailed inscription on the back of the drawing, underscoring the moment in which it was created.

Marin writes: "This drawing was done as you see on the front in Dec 40 at the time when the war was more or less a deadlock. Italy being practically smashed, France in trouble with Germany as a result of the Laval Petain difference Germany wanting the French Fleet (I don’t think still get it). America will shortly have to come into the war & Mr … … is a Sgt or Section Leader in the Home Guard shortly having to register for nightly service and still hasn’t made his mind which branch of the army he’s going in, bombing goes on practically every night, but you don’t take much notice and keep in bed by the way at this moment Churchill stands supreme at the head of affairs & could if he chose (I feel sure) be a dictator. This may happen."

Marin's inscription emphasizes the chaotic uncertainty of the moment while underscoring the steadfast leadership of Churchill. As prime minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Winston Churchill presided over one of the most turbulent periods in British history. The indomitable statesman led Great Britain to victory during World War II, while his now-legendary speeches inspired the country during her darkest hours. The only British Prime Minister to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, Churchill was also an author, historian, and painter in his private life. Marin's heroic and detailed portrait immortalizes not just Churchill's physical likeness, but also his tenaciousness and strength of character-- the qualities of the leaser that continue to inspire and fascinate history buffs and everyday citizens alike today.
