This hand-carved picture frame is an important relic of naval history. It is crafted of wood from the legendary HMS Victory, the British Royal Navy’s most famous warship. On October 21, 1805, Admiral Lord Nelson defeated the combined French and Spanish fleets during the infamous Battle of Trafalgar aboard the HMS Victory. Launched in 1765, the impressive ship took over 6,000 oak trees to build. This frame is intricately carved with a scrolling oak leaf motif, a symbol of the British monarchy representing strength, stability and nobility.

The Battle of Trafalgar marked the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte’s campaign to invade England and established Britain's naval supremacy for the next two centuries. The conflict was waged between the British Royal Navy and the French and Spanish Coalition and was the most decisive confrontation of the Napoleonic Wars. Twenty-seven British ships led by Nelson aboard the HMS Victory defeated 33 French and Spanish ships just west of Cape Trafalgar located on the southwest coast of Spain. During the battle, Nelson was stuck in the spine by a French marksman aboard the Redoutable at an estimated range of 50 feet. He died three hours later. Afforded a state funeral and heralded as a national hero, numerous monuments commemorate this immense victory and Nelson's legacy, including the 170-foot Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square in London.

The frame contains a mezzotint laid on canvas of Nelson after a portrait by John Hoppner R.A. The mezzotint was published by Colnaghi & Co. on January 9, 1806, the day of the Admiral’s state funeral held at St. Paul's Cathedral. The reverse bears a partially legible label that states, "This frame is made of the timbers of the Victory…," later annotated, "The Gift of Lady Puleston to Charles Watkin [Wynne Eyton] Albrighton Hall June 20th 1840."
