La Barque du Passeur à Pagny
(The Ferryman's Boat at Pagny)

Pastel on card

Rich textures and vibrant hues combine in this colorful pastel by French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro. Entitled La Barque du Passeur à Pagny, the composition captures a ferryman on a verdant, tree-lined river in Pagny. As is evidenced by this atmospheric work, Pissarro's technique reveals the strong influence of his grandfather, the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro. His swift and short brushstrokes of brilliant color bring to life the multi-hued tranquility of the French countryside, capturing the radiant light of the landscape.

Hailing from a long lineage of painters, Pissarro seemed destined to pick up the paintbrush, and he did so at a young age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14, and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography and publishing to painting. His reputation as a painter of talent quickly spread, resulting in a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works like the present piece, which are highly collected.
