La belle Odette, l'ete au Deauville
(The Beautiful Odette, Summer in Deauville

Oil on canvas
Signed and dated "Dilley - 93" (lower right)

Ramon Dilley is celebrated for his Belle Époque scenes that capture the vivacious atmosphere of Paris, from its spirited cafes and boulevards to its glamorous women. La belle Odette, l'ete au Deauville is exemplary of his output, boasting a compelling composition, a fashionable subject, and a highly modern palette. In the foreground, a stylish lady and child in lithe poses stand next to each other on the boardwalk, taking in the beach scene with a quiet sophistication. His exceptional canvases, with their lively brushwork, elongated figures and modern use of color, are reminiscent of the famed French painters Kees van Dongen and Jean-Pierre Cassigneul, and this composition highlights the very best aspects of Dilley's unique style.

Gomez Ramon y Romero was born in Madrid in 1933; by 1936, his family fled to France in order to escape the civil war in Spain. Thereafter, he would spend most of his life in France, finding inspiration in the French avant-garde and celebrity scene. Under the patronage of the sculptor Paul Delmondo, he was admitted to the École du Louvre, where he honed his already impressive artistic skills. In the 1960s, he changed his name to "Dilley" under the advice of the art historian and auctioneer Maurice Rheims. Celebrated for the mix of old world beauty and modern fashion in his works, Dilley's oeuvre is highly collectible. Examples can be found in many distinguished private collections around the world, including the collections of the Shah of Iran, Prince Rainier of Monaco, Princess Ana of Singapore and Valery Giscard d'Estaing.
