Oil on canvas
In this exceptional oil on canvas entitled La Moisson from French artist Blanche Hoschedé-Monet, eight bales of hay dot a scenic landscape. Executed circa 1885, a formative moment in the artist's career, the oil on canvas is an homage to Hoschedé-Monet’s teacher and stepfather, Claude Monet, and his impact on the young adult. Her impressionistic, almost feathery brushstrokes recall a windswept day in the French countryside. The pastel palette of yellows, greens and blues invites the viewer to relax and immerse themselves in the pristine landscape. Much like her mentor, Hoschedé-Monet demonstrates clear attention to the effect of changing light on the vista, with hints of sunset lingering in the upper register of the painting.
Hoschedé-Monet began painting at the young age of 11 years old, quickly becoming Monet’s protegé. He advised her against pursuing academic artistic training, and instead fostered her growth in painting en plein air in the countryside. Monet’s famed composition In the Woods at Giverny, painted in 1887, captures the young artist in those formative years as she blissfully paints at her easel. Blanche’s mother, Alice Hoschedé, would eventually marry Claude Monet only a few years later in 1892. Hoschedé-Monet continued to paint, and exhibited at the famed Salon des Indépendants in 1905, where the revered gallery Durand-Ruel purchased one of her works. The artist then began to exhibit her paintings again at the Paris Salon, achieving success and acclaim among French collectors.
After her mother and husband’s death, Hoschedé-Monet returned to Giverny in 1914 to care for her stepfather as his eyesight and health deteriorated. During this time, Monet was working on his mural-sized Nympheas (Water Lilies). The relationship between Monet and his stepdaughter was enhanced by their mutual devotion to the gardens at Giverny. Both were avid gardeners, and nature became the canvas for their artistic ideals. Between the two of them, they created a virtual utopia that they translated onto canvas, sometimes in collaboration.
Hoschedé-Monet's works rarely come to market as they reside in many French museums and private collections. La Moisson is joined by a certificate of authenticity from Philippe Piguet, the art historian and expert on the paintings of Blanche Hoschedé-Monet. Further, this painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the artist.
