Oil on canvas
This extraordinary oil on canvas is a painterly tour de force by the French painter H. Claude Pissarro. The influence of his grandfather, the legendary Impressionist Camille Pissarro, is keenly felt in his vibrant palette and distinctive style. This work, which captures the waterfront homes in Juan-les-Pins on the Mediterranean Sea, is imbued with the colorful hues, rich textures and light-filled brilliance that exemplifies Pissarro's artistic virtuosity. Through his renowned eye for composition, the ambiance of the tranquil scene is captured in the impasto of each and every brushstroke.
Multi-hued and monumental trees fill the foreground, dwarfing two well-dressed ladies sitting in the shade of their branches. The vibrant hues of the women's dresses reflect the kaleidoscopic hues of the sun-soaked coastline stretching towards the mountains of the distant background. Heavily influenced by the Impressionists, Pissarro sacrifices detail in favor of atmosphere, an aesthetic effect that evokes an emotional response to this French artist's romanticized vision.
Raised in a prolific artistic environment, Pissarro was an avid student of both his father, French painter Paul-Emile Pissarro, and his grandfather, Camille. He exhibited his first works at the young age of fourteen and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography and publishing to painting. His reputation as an artist led to a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece.
The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
