Bright color and a wonderful understanding of light and shadow characterize this oil on canvas by the celebrated French artist, Hughes Claude Pissarro. Following the artistic traditions of his father and grandfather before him, Pissarro infuses his canvas with dynamic light and vibrant colors. Here, the artist beautifully interprets this multi-hued cobblestone street scene, capturing the town and its quaint structures with his celebrated post-impressionist style.

Raised in a prolific artistic environment, Pissarro was an avid student of both his father, French painter Paul-Emile Pissarro, and his grandfather, Camille. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography and publishing to painting. His reputation led to a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present painting.
