This oil on canvas by French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro captures the charm of the romantic past as an early model automobile and pedestrians in 19th-century dress all make their way across a cobblestone street. Following the artistic tradition of his grandfather, the legendary Camille Pissarro, Pissarro’s radiant works are infused with dynamic light and vibrant colors. The present piece is no exception, and Pissarro brilliantly interprets the multi-hued shadows cast on the street against the stunning backdrop of a turquoise sky.

Raised in a prolific artistic environment, Pissarro was an avid student of both his father, French painter Paul-Emile Pissarro and his grandfather, Camille. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the Ecole du Musée du Louvre and Ecole Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography and publishing to painting. His reputation as a painter of talent quickly spread, resulting in a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works like the present piece, which have been exhibited around the world since 1985 and are highly collected.
