Béraud developed the principal figures, architecture and movement of the final composition in this remarkably detailed work.

With swift lines and carefully placed hatching, Béraud captures the animated crowd dispersing after Sunday Mass. Fashionably dressed men, women and children gather along the iron fence of the church, while carriages, pedestrians and a prominent streetlamp lead the eye into the bustling avenue. The artist gives particular attention to the figures in the foreground, using darker, denser strokes to distinguish them from the lightly suggested architecture and distant crowd. The completed painting, one of his masterpieces, was exhibited at the Paris Salon of 1877, where it earned praise for being “completely Parisian and up-to-date.”

Born in Saint Petersburg and active in Paris, Béraud trained under the renowned academic painter Léon Bonnat and made his Salon debut in 1873. He became celebrated for his precise yet animated depictions of Parisian boulevards, cafés, theaters and fashionable society. Béraud often traveled through the city in a specially equipped carriage that allowed him to sketch its crowds directly from life. His works now serve as vivid visual records of Paris during the late 19th century, and examples belong to such institutions as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Musée d’Orsay.

Circa 1877

Paper: 10 3/4" high x 15 3/4" wide (27.31 x 40.01 cm)
Frame: 21 5/16" high x 26 1/8" wide x 2" deep (54.17 x 66.35 x 5.08 cm)

Provenance:
Private collection
Private collection, United States
M.S.
