Les pigeons de Venise
(The Pigeons of Venice)

Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower left)
Pastel on card

The pigeons of Venice take to the air in this pastel by French artist H. Claude Pissarro. While the painter is more closely associated with his views of Paris and rural France, Venice was also among his beloved subjects. The bright palette and modern brushwork distinctive to the artist are well suited to capturing the turquoise-blue skies and historic buildings of the legendary lagoon city. His unique style brings the present view vividly to life, making his traditional subject modern with his daring use of color.

Raised in a prolific artistic environment, Pissarro was an avid student of both his father, French painter Paulémile Pissarro, and his grandfather, Camille. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris at the École du Musée du Louvre and École Normale Supérieur. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography and publishing to painting. His reputation as an artist led to a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece.
