Any weaver's dream, this Louis XV-period French tapestry loom is a stunning example of the very finest quality workmanship. A highly important tool in the creation of tapestries, it is itself an object of beauty and work of art. The piece is crafted entirely from Cuban mahogany, with gilded brass hardware that complements the natural golden red hue of the wood. Two rollers rest at each end, the upper for feeding thread and the lower for rolling the completed tapestry. Between them are the warp threads, which provide the structure for the tapestry. Furthermore, the brass rollers and warp may also be removed to transform the loom into a needlepoint stand, lending it a dual functionality. It was almost certainly specially made for the private use of a wealthy individual with a proclivity for the two art forms. The extraordinary tool has been fortunate enough to stand the test of time, maintaining a high level of quality and craftsmanship.

The tapestry has existed as an art form since antiquity, though it reached new heights in the 17th century when Louis XIV set up the Royal Tapestry Manufactory at the Gobelins. With the growing prosperity of France during the early 18th century, floor carpets and wall tapestries emerged as an integral part of room décor among the elite. This trend was inspired by the court, which was lavishly decorating the royal palaces with carpets and wall coverings from France, as well as precious examples from the East. This weaver's loom is a stunning relic from this golden age of the tapestry, representing the patience, skill and artistry necessary to craft these woven masterpieces.
