This remarkable marble bust of Napoleon Bonaparte by French sculptor Charles Dupaty is a striking portrait of the iconic emperor. Wearing a bicorne hat atop his furrowed brow, Napoleon is portrayed by the artist with the distinguished air and unwavering tenacity for which he was famous. Busts such as this one that were made during Napoleon’s lifetime are extremely rare, and thus this significant portrayal was likely created for a government building or as a personal commission.
Born in Bordeaux in 1771 and originally studying landscape painting, Dupaty quickly devoted himself to sculpture under the tutelage of distinguished French sculptor François-Frédéric Lemot, whose Neoclassical influence is seen in much of Dupaty’s work. He won the Prix de Rome in 1799 and subsequently studied in Italy for eight years before returning to France, where he exhibited at the Salon from 1793 to 1822. In 1823, he was appointed the position of professor at the École des Beaux-Arts and adjunct curator at the Galerie du Luxembourg. His work is held in many prestigious collections including the Palace of Versailles, Jardin des Plantes in Paris, Place des Vosges in Paris and the Dahesh Museum of Art in New York.
