This rare four-piece Martelé silver coffee service by the Gorham Silver Company represents some of the very best American silver ever made. The custom-crafted, hand-wrought set comprises a coffee pot, sugar bowl and creamer, each embossed and chased with flowers and foliage, with a matching serving tray. The Martelé line of Gorham silver was all formed entirely by hand by the firm's very best craftsmen, and thus was very time intensive to create. According to factory records, this service required an amazing 356 hours to craft, including 88 hours on the coffee pot alone. Also, because it was formed by hand, the firm used a softer, more pure form of silver for their Martelé line, matching the .9584 Britannia standard rather than the more typical sterling silver used by other American firms.

In 1891, the Gorham Company hired William C. Codman to serve as chief designer and, under his direction, they introduced a line of hand-wrought silver that would take the world by storm. The lavish new line was dubbed Martelé from the French verb marteler, or "to hammer." They introduced the line in 1900 at the Exposition Universelle in Paris, where it was met with critical acclaim. Inspired by the Art Nouveau movement, Martelé silver became Gorham's crowning achievement, and examples of superior Martelé continue to be among the most highly collected silver in the world.

This important service is described at length on page 444 in Martelé: Gorham's Art Nouveau Silver by Larry J. Pristo.

Each piece bears the Gorham Martelé marks and the number ".9584" corresponding to the silver content.
