This rare half-liter Mettlach beer stein by Villeroy & Boch depicts a gentleman enjoying the vices of a tavern while his wife glares behind him, broom in hand. The humorous etching is joined by an inscription that appropriately reads Je schöner die Kneip, desto schlimmer für’s Weib; je schlimmer das Weib, um so schöner die Kneip, or "The finer the tavern, the worse for the wife; the worse the wife, the finer the tavern.” Designed by noted Mettlach artist H. Schlitt, the stein retains its original figural thumb lift pewter lid, a quality that makes it very desirable.
