Depicting six famous Roman sites in exacting detail, this Italian side table is a rare example of the art of micromosaic. Thousands of miniature tiles were assembled and perfectly matched for color, size, and placement, then painstakingly placed to exacting measures to create each scene. The table top is a virtual tour of Rome's most beloved and oft-visited sites, including Saint Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum, and the Pantheon, all surrounded in sleek black marble.

At the table's center is an exquisitely rendered micromosaic medallion of the Doves of Pliny, the most famous of all ancient micromosaic designs. The doves were described by Pliny in his The Natural History from the 1st century AD, which refers to a "wonderful specimen of a dove drinking" by Sosus at Pergamon. Surrounded by a band of precious malachite, the birds are beautifully represented here with a masterful degree of realism and detail.

Only a handful of these remarkable tables were ever made due to the time-consuming and fastidious nature of the art form. While smaller micromosaic pieces such as snuff boxes, pendants, and plaques were popular as souvenirs among 18th- and 19th-century tourists, large micromosaic works such as this would have been prohibitively costly to all but the wealthiest clientele. These works were sought after by illustrious collectors such as the French Emperor Napoléon and members of the Russian nobility.

Completed by an Empire-style base with doré bronze accents, this exceptional piece is among the rarest of the decorative arts.
